How to use
the NVDA Remote Support add-on
How to
provide assistance to another NVDA user (using the
NVDA Remote Support add-on)
NVDA
Remote Support is an add-on that allows another NVDA user to
assist you (or allows you to assist another NVDA user) over
the internet while you are both using NVDA.
Both
people will need a copy of NVDA installed on their computer.
If they have not got a copy of NVDA a copy can be obtained
from http://www.nvaccess.org
Both
people using NVDA will also need to ensure that the Remote
Support add-on for NVDA is installed. You can obtain the
add-on from the following web page http://nvdaremote.com/download/
The
add-on must be installed on both people’s copies of NVDA,
otherwise they will not be able to remote into one another’s
computers.
You
will of course also need internet access, so no matter where
in the world they are, you will be able to provide
assistance to them (or them to you).
To receive
assistance from another person using NVDA (via the
Remote Support add-on)
On the
remote computer - the person needing assistance – you will
need to allow your machine to be controlled by doing the
following:
When
NVDA is running and the NVDA remote support add-on is
installed, press the NVDA
key and the letter N until you hear the NVDA menu. Arrow
down to tools
(you will hear sub menu). Next arrow right, then down to the NVDA
remote support add-on (you will hear NVDA say remote sub menu),
then press the Enter
key. A sub menu will come up. Locate the Connect menu, then
press the Enter key
again. When the next screen comes up, you will need to do
the following. NVDA should default to the Client radio
button. It will say checked button. Leave it on this
setting. Next, tab
once. Here it should give you some options. For
example, Control another machine. You will need to arrow
down until you hear NVDA say Allow this machine to
be controlled. Tab again until you hear NVDA say Host. In this
editable box type the following server name nvdaremote.com
Tab
again and you will hear NVDA say Key. Here you can
make up a unique key. It is wise to at least have 7 digits
in it. This key that you are entering will need to be given
to the person who is going to help you. This can be done via
phone, text, email and so on. If you don’t want to make a
key, one can be generated for you. Just tab once more until
you hear generate key button. Press the Enter key on this
button and a 7 digit number will be generated for you. As
mentioned above, this same key must be sent to the person
helping you (so that they enter that exact same number on
their end). Tab down to the ok button and
press the Enter key.
This will connect your copy of NVDA to the server. You
should hear a beep.
To provide
assistance to another person using NVDA (via the
Remote Support add-on)
The
person providing assistance to you on
the controlling computer will need to do the following on
his/her end:
With
their copy of NVDA running and the add-on installed, they
will need to press the NVDA key + the letter
N. When the NVDA
menu comes up, arrow down until you hear NVDA say tools sub menu.
Next arrow right,
then down until
you hear NVDA say remote.
Press the Enter
key and a sub menu will come up. Locate the connect menu, then
press the Enter
key. When the next screen comes up, they will need to do the
following. NVDA should default to the client radio
button. You should hear NVDA say it is checked. Leave it on
this setting. Next, tab
once until you hear NVDA say Control another
machine radio button checked. Leave it on this
setting. If it is not on this setting use the up or down
arrow keys to change it to this setting. Tab again until you
hear NVDA say host.
This is an editable box and the following will have to be
typed in nvdaremote.com
Tab
once more and you will hear NVDA say key. The key the other person has
sent you will need to be put into this editable box
(for example, they may give you the following 7 digit number
4321234).
They
will then need to tab
down to the ok
button and press the Enter
key. You should hear a beep when it is connected to the
server.
When
both sides are connected you should hear some beeps. The
person who is trying to help you is on the controlling
computer. He will need to use the F11 key to remote
into your computer. (It should say sending keys).
There are no visuals to rely on, only what is said by the
remote screen reader. You should be able to move around the
remote desktop. To go back to your own desktop, press the F11 key again and
it will put you back onto your own desktop. (It should state
stop sending keys).
Ending your
NVDA Remote Support add-on session
When
you have finished the session with the person you have
helped, both of you will need to disconnect from the server.
Press the NVDA key
+ the letter N. When the NVDA menu comes up, arrow down to tools
(it should say tools sub menu), then right arrow, then
down arrow to the
remote support
menu (it should say remote submenu). Press the right arrow key,
then down arrow
to disconnect.
Press the Enter
